9 am and ready to ride.

While I still have not yet completed telling my Unbound XL story I have been actively training for my next big adventure. In just 2 weeks from now I will be doing the Gravel Worlds Long Voyage 300 mile race in Lincoln Nebraska. My hope is to be much better prepared for this one.

Most of my rides in my area of New Hampshire have quite a few steep climbs. While this certainly is one good form of training I also need to get in some long duration but low intensity rides. Keeping the intensity low isn’t really compatible when climbing up a 15% grade. I do however have one excellent resource for long easy rides.

The Northern Rail Trail is a 58 mile former railway running from Boscawen to Lebanon NH. For the month of August they are doing a fund raising challenge. The challenge is to cover the entire route throughout the month. A couple weeks ago I did a 100 mile ride where did 50 miles out and back. I figured this was the perfect time to ride the entire trail, end to end and back again in one day!

In total I rode the 116 miles in just under 9 hours, this included a quick break for a coke and a bag of chips just after the halfway point. It was a hot day so that should help me get ready for the Nebraska heat!

Enjoy the views.

In a few places the trail gets narrow with vegetation but in general is in really great condition.
The halfway point at the Lebanon end of the trail.
In several places the old railway cuts through the solid granite.
I ran out of water on the way back. Glad I knew about this water spigot.
The spigot at the Proctor Academy soccer fields saved my day in the heat.
Not a lot of corn fields like this here in New Hampshire. I expect to see a lot more in Nebraska.
116 miles!
9 hours and 116 miles later back where I started but much more tired now!
